Beginners Guide For Blogging

In a nutshell, your blogging journey will start after completing the following steps:

Step 1: Pick a domain, niche, or a relevant topic you are passionate and knowledgeable about.

Step 2: Select a blogging platform that suits you the best. WordPress is a clear winner for most people.

Step 3: Select a domain name and hosting. You can have both at Hostinger, GoDaddy, or Bluehost.

Step 4: Install WordPress on your hosting.

Step 5: Select a theme. Install relevant plugins.

Step 6: Start writing your first blog.

Step 7: Market your blog.

Let’s deep dive into each step.

Pick a domain

Starting a blog is no rocket science, but finding what to blog about is. You cannot randomly start blogging about something. You have to be very specific about your domain. That does not always mean you have to be passionate about it, but what matters is your interest in the domain or niche you choose. For me, it was tech, so I am currently trying to focus on building one of the best tech websites in the world.

Select a blogging platform

If you are serious about blogging, you will need a permanent address to your blog on the web. You can go for getting a site developed from an experienced developer or learn development and develop it yourself. Although this is a great way to have full control of your blog, it is often not the most practical one. Therefore, WordPress came into being and after that many others like Wix came in too.

Believe it or not, most newbies today rely on creating a WordPress blog which is also one of the common practices for most beginner bloggers. You don’t have to be a technical guy or a coder to start a website using WordPress, it has everything you need.

Select domain and hosting

Now that you have chosen WordPress as your blogging platform, it is time to find a place where your WordPress setup can reside. This place is called hosting. The Internet is like our world, everything on it has an address. Hosting is a way of renting or owning an apartment in the city of your choice. For my website, I chose Hostinger. It provides an amazing level of customization and its cPanel has many features to make your job easier.

Now find an address for your blog. This is called domain name in the Internet world. Choose a smaller domain, a name that can resemble your blog. A food blog should have a name that sounds as delicious as the food you might choose to discuss on your blog.

My blog name is simply techievechie. This name is for people to realize that the moment they land on my blog, they are going to find a lot of stuff about the tech they always wanted to know.

Install WordPress on your Hosting

WordPress is a Content Management System (CMS) that helps you manage your website, customizations, content, and images, everything from one single dashboard. All you need to do is once you pick the hosting of your choice, you can search for WordPress and install it. Once that is done, you can simply login and start exploring.

In the real sense, your full site is ready now. You can start exploring the platform and understand how to make your blog look beautiful and customize it.

Customize your blog

WordPress does come with a default, simple theme for hosting your content, but it is much more powerful than that. It has so many themes, plugins and so on to make your blogging journey easier at every step. From beautifying your website to handling the technical part, WordPress plugins make it simpler for all its users. Therefore, you don’t need to be a hardcore developer to have a website.

For instance, SEO is one of the important parts of making your website visible on search engines. There are tools that help you do all these things, and professionals who understand the art of SEO more than ever, but not everyone can afford these professionals and understand these complex tools. On WordPress, all you need to do is install plugins that help you do all this at the click of a button.

Write your first blog

Alright! The setup is finally done and we are now going to start with the serious job of writing the first blog. Writing the first blog does not mean you just start writing the first thing that comes to your mind. In order to write a blog that gets traffic, you need to do some small subtasks. I am naming them here, take a look:

  1. Keyword research: List down the relevant keyword for the chosen topic
  2. Competition: Check what your competition is doing with similar topics.
  3. Structure: Write a well-structured article with different heading levels wherever needed.
  4. Reader-friendly: Don’t use jargon because not everyone coming to the website knows what you want to say.
  5. Repetition: Do not repeat ideas, sentences, and paragraphs.
  6. Plagiarism: Do not copy paste content from other websites. You will be penalized.

Start writing, keep consistency and make sure you don’t stop the momentum for at least a year. Consistency does not mean you have to write everyday, but you have to keep the pace moving. If you write one blog everyday, keep with that. If you write once in two weeks, make sure you publish 1 post in 2 weeks. That is consistency.

Other things you want to keep in mind before you publish your article are:

  1. Editing: Proofread, edit, and proofread the article. Make sure there are no grammar-errors, redundancy and others in your article. Try to keep your article to the point. You will never be perfect with language, but you can improve the accuracy of your writing.
  2. Add media: Make sure you add media to your blog. Images, videos, and gifs can help enrich your content for the user. This helps in engaging the user very well. Not only that, relevant media images can help you rank on the search engine and gain natural backlinks.
  3. Statistics and Facts: If you are writing content for a specific audience like business or finance, you might want to use facts and figures that can help you keep the information crisp and increase authority.
  4. Link internally: Add some links to other blogs on your website that help users find relevant information. For example, if you have a blog about 5 reasons to buy life insurance, someone might land on this page. What if the reader who landed here wants to know about life insurance. You can simply add a link to a blog called, What is Life Insurance? This will help your reader to navigate easily across your website and improve your website traffic.

Market your blog

Just writing and publishing will not help, if you want to go global, you have to make sure that you market your blog well. There are many ways to do so. One of the most popular ways is to post links on social media. Use platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and so on. If you are doing a professional domain like business, startups, education and so on, make sure you use LinkedIn as a platform for a stronger reach.

Posting simple infographics, blog images, stories, short videos and so many other formats are out there to help you build an audience for your blog. Starting newsletters, collecting emails and many other ways are still there to help you promote and keep the traffic flowing on your website.

So keep blogging, marketing, and take help from the experts.

Remember, blogging is one path of the career that does not have, One Size Fit All solution. This blog is just a way to help you get started on this journey which seems simple, but has a lot to keep in mind.

Remember There is Nothing Called Perfection When It comes to Blogging!
